KG 2012 MAY MONTHLY UPDATE

5/9/2012

Dear KG Members,

Please take a few second to read about a life you touched through KG.
LIFE YOU TOUCHED !

Manakamana Shrestha, a grade 3 student of Pragati School enjoys cooking. She aspires to be a dancer.  One of the special things about Manakamana is that she is ever eager to show her dancing talent in front of the crowd. The story of her life is quite different from what we generally see in typical Nepalese society.  She came to Kathmandu with her mother and two siblings in search for better education and income, while her father lives in village Sindhupalchowk.  Her father is a farmer by occupation.  She goes to visit her father once a year during Dashain.

One school year was disrupted because of the financial crisis in her family. Thanks to the teacher of Pragati, who after seeing Manakamana playing around Pragati, decided to readmit her to the school. Nonetheless, she hasn’t lost her interest in reading and understanding English grammar.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"And as we are - the world is. That is, if we are greedy, envious, competitive, our society will be competitive, envious, greedy, which brings misery and war. The State is what we are. To bring about order and peace, we must begin with ourselves and not with society, not with the State, for the world is ourselves"..."If we would bring about a sane and happy society we must begin with ourselves and not with another, not outside of ourselves, but with ourselves." May at KG

SILENCE SPEAKS FOR FREEDOM

KG organized a program “Silence Speaks for Freedom” starting from Friday 25th May, 2012. The objectives of this program is to grow a culture of caring and of self responsibility.
Around 20 people from different walks of life stood on the lane of Thamel holding the banners with the slogans defying bandhas, not just in Kathmandu but in any place in Nepal. We are considering holding it as a weekly Friday event.

KG FOUNDER'S INTERVIEW

5/6/2012

Summary: We have to learn to care.  We don't know how to do that well enough, and that is the root of our collective non-performance.
May 27 2012: from Umanga's Blog

" Today the Prime Minister said to the media that what politicians say to the public, for public consumption, is not relevant.
And he is right.
The politicians can say one thing to us and do just the opposite.  There is no consequence.  We the people do not know how to care enough that we gain politicians' respect, their accountability.
Next election, I will care to remember this.  I will care enough to vote for those politicians who think the public matters, that what they say to the public matters. In fact, I will vote to emphasize that 'what politicians say to the public is the ONLY thing that matters'.
"
Salient Points:
  1. Nepalis have integrated 'Live and Let Live' attitude in their lives, thanks to 3000 years of being a cultural melting pot.
  2. This attitude has risks and promise. .
  3. This promise of co-existence that can inspire the world, make Nepal the retirement-destination-of choice for people around the world (not just to Nepalis living abroad).
  4. The risk is that we become too selfish (of 'minding one's own business') and fatalistic (lack of self-criticism). In the last 2 decades, politics have over-run all non-political institution, like social, religion and cultural.  We the common people stayed quiet 'minding our own business', listening only to political advisers and international well-wishers with total 'lack of self-criticism'.
  5. Now, politicians are over-running the sanctity of our personal life (by stirring suspicion against one another, among neighbors who have lived in peace for centuries).  And we want to respond to that, but we do not know 'HOW'.
  6. We keep blaming the politicians, their dirty tactics and power-negotiations, and we keep hoping some political savior will save us.  We keep looking for political heros (because we are used to be governed by kings, feudal ones or political ones).
  7. Instead, can we can begin by learning to care for others, and hence, become caring individuals? Perhaps, if we become better individuals, we would be able to govern ourselves better, with or without the politicians' cooperation.
